Who is Socrates? Life & Death of Mr. Western Philosophy

Socrates can be considered the father of Western philosophy.

Its influence can be found in almost all philosophical works, with his eyes still discussed and debated to this day.

Socrates lived in ancient Athens between the years 470-399 BC. He was a famous philosopher who support themselves as a bricklayer.

As a philosopher, it is strange that Socrates never wrote anything into his eyes.

That's because, Socrates view can only be obtained from the writings of ancient philosophers such as Xenophon, Aristotle and Plato. All these philosophers wrote about Socrates after his death.

The only work which is known to write about Socrates during his lifetime was a fictional drama titled "Clouds".

Many people believe that Socrates live a life of respectable and virtuous, and trying to always abide by the laws of the country.

He lived his life in accordance with the principles of the sublime and believed in justice. Socrates believed that virtue is knowledge.

Despite having a noble character, Socrates got a lot of criticism that eventually led to criticism and be the cause of his death.

Socrates is not favored by many elite citizens of Athens. This is caused by what is now known as the Socratic irony and the Socratic method.

Socratic irony means that one pretends to be stupid to expose the false beliefs of his opponent during the discussion.

While the Socratic method refers to a series of questions and answers is intended to analyze, test, or define a particular concept.

Famous Socrates claimed that the only thing he knows is that he does not know anything, so-called Socratic irony.

He often discuss with people who claimed to be wise across Athens to learn of them through the Socratic method.

With the question, Socrates intended to demonstrate the lack of basis in their beliefs.

This in turn makes the shame many aristocratic contemporaries. However, young people are actually interested in methods that Socrates get a lot of followers.

Groups who are not satisfied then make a false accusation that Socrates tried corrupting youth and worship false gods.

Plato's Apology is a recording entitled to the defenses of Socrates in the session made for trial.

Socrates finally relented and received a death sentence for his commitment to the law.

He died at the age of 71 years due to drinking poison punished even though it opens the opportunity to escape with the help of his friends.

Socrates was the teacher and mentor of the great philosopher Plato. In his work, Plato also creates figurative character of Socrates. Socrates is a character created figurative Plato to express his views.

In many books such as Plato in The Republic, Crito and Phaedrus, he also used the same method.

Although we can not definitively distinguish between the views of Plato and Socrates view, a little more Plato depicts Socrates real enough.

Figurative Socrates also appears as a major character in the drama ancient satire, Clouds, written by the Greek poet Aristophanes and staged during the life of Socrates.

The play is a lot of ridicule Socrates and other philosophers were fused to his character.

According to Plato, Socrates was very disturbed by the portrayal of Aristophanes.

Although the Clouds is satire, but many experts believe that the depiction therein represent the actual character of Socrates.
